What does “Carrier Oil” mean?
Essential Oils are often diluted for different uses; it’s diluted with a vegetable oil, which is the term “Carrier Oil” (vegetable is used, with the similar effects as coconut oil/ grapeseed oil). Carrier Oils ensures that when Essential Oils are applied topically, they are applied comfortably without skin irritation. Don’t worry though, by using a carrier oil to dilute, this does not affect the Essential Oil and it also prevents waste due to excessive application.
Why would you dilute essential oils?
Essential oil dilution is important for two safety reasons. One, to avoid skin reactions: irritation, sensitization and phototoxicity. Two, to avoid systemic toxicity, such as fetotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity and neurotoxicity. Essential Oils are highly concentrated products, if apply to the skin directly, can cause a hot or burning sensation. For help and guidance around diluting or type of product, feel free to get in touch and we’ll be happy to assist.
What should I do if I’ve applied diluted Essential oil to my skin and I feel discomfort o irritation?
First, stop using the mixture. If discomfort or irritation occurs, you can apply any type of other carrier oil to the affected area. Never attempt to clean the affected area with water as this may cause further discomfort. If a rash occurs, drink plenty of water as this may be an indication of detoxification; water will help remove body toxins, which can be harmful to the skin. To avoid further discomfort, do not use the mixture and you may consult one of our aromatherapists to provide guidance on the suitability of other mixtures.
Can we simply wash off the Essential Oil with water?
This is highly not recommended. Applying water will act as a catalyst and enhance the skins ability to absorb the Essential Oil. If Essential Oil gets into your eye(s), immediately flush with a carrier oil to alleviate discomfort and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Can you apply Essential oils to sensitive areas?
As mentioned, Essential Oils are highly concentrated products. We strongly recommend avoiding contact with Essential Oils and sensitive areas such as eyes, ears, genitals and mucous membranes.
How frequently can I apply Essential oils?
The frequency can depend on the type of Essential Oil you use and your skin condition. Since Essential oils are highly concentrated products – start low and go slow. For beginners, 1-2 drops are enough. Depending on the essential oil, you can gradually build up to 3-4 uses per day if desired. Excessive use of essential oils may increase the risk for adverse reactions.
I’m pregnant. Can I still use essential oils?
The simple answer is yes. However, like any other medical conditions, it is strongly recommended to seek medical advice first before application; in this case, someone who is experienced in Essential Oil usage.
